Santiam Christian
Santiam Christian Schools was developed on the site of the old Adair Air Force Base. The majority of the buildings are old and have been adapted as required over the years to create a private high school. Enrollment has increased significantly over the years and it was becoming increasingly difficult to serve the needs of the students. DJ Architecture was asked to assist in determining a needs program and proposing a new building to server those needs. Because this is a private school, funding for the project would come from grants and donations. Working closely with the building committee it was determined that a new multipurpose building was required.
The new building houses several functions. A new high school regulation size basketball court is the main feature and has the capacity to seat 1,000 spectators. A new cafeteria and kitchen are just off the court and serves the dual function as a concession stand. There are lockers for both men's and women's sports just off a main corridor leading to the court and to the sports fields. The second floor has six classrooms and a wrestling room. A unique aspect of the project was using the existing topography to create a second floor access from grade. This approach eliminated the necessity for an elevator and the associated costs.
